To live out our pledge as Catholic environmental stewards, a number of parishioners from around the Raleigh diocese have come together to form "NC Catholics Caring for our Common Home." Our mission is to help North Carolina Catholics become better stewards of the earth and to care for all of God's creatures. We focus on providing information about simple, direct environmental stewardship programs and events involving environmental education, recycling, clean water, energy efficiency, and Pope Frances' seven-year Laudato Si action plan.
The enormity of the environmental damage described by Pope Francis, as well as the complex nature of the solutions needed to deal with them, can overwhelm ordinary citizens. It may seem impossible to change our ways or to do much good. But change can start at our local parishes and in our homes and schools. Please consider incorporating some of the events and programs listed below into your daily affairs and Church activities, and join us in a prayer that Pope Francis leaves us with at the conclusion of Laudato Si.
A prayer for our earth LS 246
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.
